Saved with optimum items and equipment right in front of the Black Gate. Just step north through the fake wall and onto the teleporter for the (very, very easy) final battle with Hook's party. All the items required to destroy the Black Gate can be found in the Avatar's inventory. If you want to explore the world with a high level party, just cast Recall on any of the virtue stones in Katrina's inventory (the yellow one leads to Britannia). (save game may only work with the Ultima 7 version that has the Forge of Virtue patch).
